TO ELIMINATE BIAS IN THE WORKPLACE AND THE LEGAL PROFESSION, OPEN AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION ABOUT REAL ISSUES IS A NECESSITY.
Up Close and Personal: A Diversity Story is a unique program that combines examples of real-world experiences, powerful and poignant voices from current and past generations, and lessons on how to effectively communicate with people of all cultures. With a focus on developing and enhancing effective communication skills, this program is aimed at addressing the particular challenges of the legal workplace and the legal profession.
POINTS OF FOCUS
A PERSONAL JOURNEY
Speaker’s Edge founder Shawn Judge and her husband, noted stage and screen actor Stephen Yoakam, lead a thought-provoking journey into diversity communications. From different multicultural backgrounds and almost 20 years of marriage, they draw upon and share their experiences as interracial partners and parents to help teach and inform others.
GIVING VOICE TO OTHERS
The powerful words of some of the great voices in literature, like Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, and Anna Deavere Smith among others, provide a platform for lessons in inclusion. The works will be used to impart understanding and spark dialogue about the challenges and necessity of inclusion as it applies to the legal profession.
LESSONS IN DIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS
“That’s not politically correct!” The fear of what to say and how to say it is the great inhibitor to effective communication. The Up Close and Personal program offers insights into respectful and appropriate messaging that addresses diversity differences (and unites similarities).
This program has been approved by Minnesota Continuing Legal Education for Elimination of Bias credit.
